It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our community’s leaders. Dr. Adélamar (Dely) N. Alcántara passed away in Narita, Japan. She was a demographer at UNM and had been a President of the Asian American Association of New Mexico. In 2018 Dely was presented the “Dolores Huerta Si Se Puede Award,” presented at the 25th Annual César Chávez Celebration. She was a strong advocate for taking care of the Asian Community in Albuquerque, founding the New Mexico Asian Family Center. She led the charge in the Filipino community, having been president of the Filipino American Foundation of NM and the Filipino American Community Council and co-founding the Filipino American National Historic Society – Rio Grande. Uncovering contributions of the Asian American Community and seeing them recognized was one of her great passions. She co-founded, with her husband Ted Jojola, the Manoa Alcántara Jojola International Center for Arts & Language (MAJICAL) Montessori School in the province of Tarlac, Philippines. She was a stellar role model, with a sharp mind and humorous wit, wisdom and always courageous. Dely was respected, is missed. She’s survived by her husband Ted Jojola. Memorial arrangements will be provided at a later date.
